Changes to computer training industry
There seems to be a lot of restructuring in our industry we can no longer sustain 5-10 training rooms.
Yes there is still a need for class room training but the volume has shrunk dramatically.
As a contract trainer gone are the days when you could get enough work from just 2 to 3 suppliers, now you need over 10 suppliers in your books.
Our calendars use to be full with confirmed bookings 3 months ahead now days your lucky to get dates let alone confirmed bookings just 1 month ahead.
What to do – Stay or get Out!!
Learn a new product. As a trainer you now have to turn Sales rep. Find a side job 1 – 2 days a week for a third of what you get paid as a trainer.
Take a 3 month contract full time if you can find it. However this has its downfalls. When your out of the loop someone else has stepped in to take your spot. You have to re build your presence back into the contracting world.
Teach something outside of Microsoft Office sutie. Possibly venture into Soft Skills teaching. This is a big jump, its a different way of teaching. Its drawing on experiences group activities, building discussions then assessing. These courses are often more than 1 to 2 dys so it keeps you busy but making the jump is like taking the first step of the edge of a cliff.
Anybody have any other suggestions!
